6/17 at Distant Castle: DZIAN! // Bloody Swimsuit // Sunshine and the Feel Good Boys

DZIAN! (charlottesville)
Dzian! (pronounced “ze-an”) revives the ecstasy of vintage rock sound from Asia. The band curates and masters the style of Taiwanese a-go-go, Japanese eleki, Indo-rock, Thai disco and shadow music, Malaysian pop yeh yeh, Khmer pop, Middle Eastern bellydance surf, and Ventures hits enjoyed by Taiwanese puppetry bands and audiences. No gimmicks, only geeks. The band embodies Taiwanese “super-cool” by recreating Nakasi (那卡西), down-home, “fashionable” party music in pre-WWII Taiwan. Committed to spectaculars, Dzian! flaunts feather boas, LEDs, authentic costumes, and choreographed belly and go-go dance, while unabashedly delivering tunes in ten languages and counting. From Chinese buffets and shopping malls in Virginia to Manhattan’s Union Square and Taiwan Center in Flushing, the band has left a trail of joyous red boa feathers. Put on your swell dancing shoes, your thumbs up, and say, “Dzian!”

BIG SHOW at the firehouse! lots of solo acts:

B°TONG (switzerland)
“b°tong is influenced by the original purveyors of industrial muzak and early pioneers of experimental electronics. his music varies from dark ambient layers of sound, brooding drones, itchy-scratchy tones to weird electronics or harsh noise. It is improvised on the spot. the sounds created give birth to images of darkness and tranquillity, the solitude of an icy polar night, or the equivalent of an underwater journey in a bottomless pit. welcome to the darker side of laptop histrionics.”

EAT CLOUD (providence)
the solo project of andrew tomasello.

GAY SHAPES
drawn & quartered into four separate solo sets. joe bastardo, sam gaskin, mickey o’hara, abdul sherzai.

II NUB
“ii nub’s music is built with a foundation of undulating ambient electronic textures and field recordings supporting minimalist drum and guitar loops, accompanied by live electronics and baritone guitar phrasing. In addition the music is complemented by live video manipulations to create expansive and diverse aural and visual environments.”

MICROSLEEP
mystery performer from western mass.

PEACE, LOVING (jamaica plain)
“‘Peace, Loving’ is a new england experiential sound-sculpture + movement-”jazz” band, currently based in Boston, Massachusetts. ‘Peace, Loving’ has composed and performed for aromatics (with three professional chefs), dances for handheld cassette players; worked as set designers, video artists, performance poets, instrument builders, venue/label operators, promoters, gardeners, cheesemongers etc.”

SON OF SALAMI (burlington, vermont)
Toby Aronson of NNA Tapes says:
When I first heard about Joey, he was described to me as “that weirdo who just moved to town and has a cardboard robot and an imaginary vampire in his band.” Over the years, Burlington, VT has grown to love Joey and all of his endeavors. I’ve seen Joey singing to frat boys, the homeless, and even the elderly. And it’s not every day that “lo-fi pop” can connect with those sorts of folks.

Joey’s music made it to LP for the first time this year with A Study In Eraserheadless Tape Recording, out on Feeding Tube Records. The record showcases Joey’s virousic method for writing and recording his damaged, warbled pop songs. Joey uses “Eraser head-less” technology, which requires only a tape deck and a microphone. The idea is that you remove the eraser head from the tape player, and when you press record, you are able to infinitely layer music on top of itself. While this technique must have been discovered by early tape music artists, I have never heard anyone militantly making pop music this way. Although is seems slightly counterintuitive, Joey uses this method (which seems to lend itself to abstraction) to make incredibly catchy and bizarre pop music.
